At a time when female filmmakers and their narratives claim visibility and recognition, The Greek Film Festival in Berlin, in collaboration with WIFT.GR (WOMEN IN FILM AND TELEVISION GR), will hold a discussion on contemporary female and non-binary identities in cinema. The collaboration, an initiative of the festival, is part of WIFT GR’s activities entitled “Sisterhood”, aiming to promote Greek female creators and empower women in the film industry.
Female filmmakers introduce liberated characters, free from stereotypes, placed in different spaces and situations, thus redefining the gaze and narrative in cinema. In this year’s Open Talk, the Festival will talk with female directors about their multifaceted leading female characters, while a non-binary director exploring the world of adult films through a radically different, personal, and liberated perspective will also join the discussion.
These different voices form a diverse panel, approaching their work from completely different starting points. The discussion focuses on character choices, film structure, and the selection of bodies and filming locations, and in this way, it sheds light on the creative decisions that define their visual approach behind the camera. The panel’s aim is to further investigate the portrayal of female and non-binary identity and sexuality in cinema, through diverse cinematic examples that share a common experience: the need to rethink how we look, how we narrate, and – at the end of the day – how we see the world through an anti-patriarchal lens.
Berlin alone, as the host city of the Festival, is a symbol of freedom. And this year’s program moves precisely towards this direction — freedom of choice, bold proposals, and liberated perspectives.
