His beginnings in documentary in Greece and his work with American farm labor leader Cesar Chavez to ground breaking hip hop music videos to crossing the digital divide of narrative filmmaking in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>The masterclass is concluded with the screening of his feature directorial debut \u2018No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo &amp; Vilmos\u2019 (USA, 2008) which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was nominated for an Emmy for the PBS version and has been screened at more than 36 festivals worldwide. The recent death of legendary refugee cinematographer \u2018Vilmos\u2019 together with the amazing images of the communist revolution in Hungary, places the film amongst the most important documentations in film history.<\/p>\n<p>Film description:<\/p>\n<p>The film traces the careers of cinematographers L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Kov\u00e1cs and Vilmos Zsigmond. These lifelong friends are Hungarian expatriates who had been studying cinematography in Hungary and defected following the 1956 Soviet invasion. From this developed a collaboration of over 20 years, many tours and records. Now, after 35 years he recorded a solo album, on which he interprets 15 of the lesser known songs of the great master. He accompanies his voice only with an elecrtic guitar. Zwischen 1984 und 1987 war er Mitglied der Band \u201epercussion &amp; strings\u201c &#8211; mit Hermann Naehring (perc), Dietrich Petzold (v), Jens Naumilkat (vc), Woka Musick (cb) u.a. 1987 bis 1989 spielte er in der Band der deutschen Singer-Songwriterin Barbara Thalheim.<\/p>\n<p>1980 kam es bei der Auff\u00fchrung des Oratoriums \u201eCanto General\u201c (Theodorakis \/ Neruda) in Berlin zur ersten Zusammenarbeit mit dem griechischen Komponisten Mikis Theodorakis. Diese Verbindung sollte nicht mehr abrei\u00dfen. 1981 u. 1982 Auff\u00fchrungen des Volksoratoriums \u201eAxion esti\u201c (Theodorakis \/ Elytis) unter der Leitung des Komponisten, die in einer LP Aufnahme endet (erschienen bei Eterna). 1987 instrumentiert Jannis Zotos die LP \u201eGisela May singt Theodorakis\u201c (Amiga). Ab 1990 leitet er das Tour Orchester von Theodorakis, schreibt daf\u00fcr die Arrangements und begleitet Theodorakis auf seinen Tourneen in Deutschland, \u00d6sterreich, Schweiz, Luxemburg, Frankreich, Belgien, Norwegen, Holland, Spanien, T\u00fcrkei, Israel, Canada und nat\u00fcrlich Griechenland. In dieser Zeit arbeitet Jannis Zotos auch mit Maria Farantouri, George Dalara, Dimitra Galani, Maria Dimitriadi, Eli Paspala, Petros Pandis. 1990\/91 instumentiert er die CD \u201eTheodorakis sings Theodorakis\u201c (Intuition), 1995 die CD Birthday Concert \u2013 Mikis Theodorakis &amp; Maria Farantouri\u201c (Tropical Music) und 1997 die CD \u201eTogether \u2013 Mikis Theodorakis &amp; S\u00fclf\u00fc Livaneli\u201c (BMG). Zwischen 1997 und 2004 begleitet er auch Maria Farantouri auf ihren Tourneen in Europa u. Amerika.<br \/>\nJannis Zotos komponiert f\u00fcr Film u. Theater (\u201eDiese Landschaft ist hart wie das Schweigen \u2013 Ritsos Film, Regie: Joachim Tschirner \/ \u201eSunny Point\u201c, Spielfilm, Regie: Wolf Vogel \/ \u201eAntigon\u00e4\u201c v. Sophokles, Neues Theater Halle, Regie: Alexander Stillmark \/ \u201eDer Auftrag\u201c v. Heiner M\u00fcller, Regie: Thomas Bischoff \/ \u201eFaust I\u201c v. J.W.v.Goethe, Regie: Thomas Bischoff \/ \u201eDer Sondeur\u201c v. Jannis Ritsos, Regie: Thomas Bischoff \/ u.a.). 1998 erscheint die CD \u201eSonne u. Zeit\u201c Maria Farantouri u. Rainer Kirchmann (Lyra), zu der Jannis Zotos einen Teil der Arrangements schrieb.<br \/>\n1990 gr\u00fcndet Jannis Zotos zusammen mit seinem Bruder Thanassis Zotos die Zotos Kompania und beginnt sich intensiv mit Rembetiko Music, Asia Minor Music und traditioneller griechischer Musik zu besch\u00e4ftigen. Er intensiviert sein Bouzoukispiel und beginnt sich mit dem Oud zu spielen (Lehrer ist der syrische Oudspieler Farhan Sabah). Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt die Zotos Kompania eine eigene, unverwechselbare Art Rembetico zu spielen. Das griechische Fernsehen ERT dreht bei einer Griechenlandtour einen Dokumentarfilm \u00fcber die Zotos Compania. 1995 erscheint die CD \u201eDeviation \u2013 Zotos Kompania live in Concert\u201c (Cooleur) und 2004 die CD \u201eLetharg\u00eda\u201c (anjoke). Die Band wird 2001 zum Folkfestival Gooik\/Belgien u. 2004 zum Tanz- und Folkfestival Rudolstadt \/ Deutschland eingeladen.<br \/>\nAb 2002 beginnt Jannis Zotos, der Tradition griechischer Komponisten folgend, Lyrik griechischer Dichter zu vertonen. Er entdeckt f\u00fcr sich die Lyrikerin Maria Polidouri (1902 \u2013 1930) und vertont elf ihrer Gedichte. Diesen Liedzyklus nennt er \u201eEROS &amp; THANATOS\u201c und erarbeitet die Livefassung mit verschiedenen Musikern, u.a. Antonis Anissegos (p), Michael Rodach (guit), Maria Simoglou (voc, oboe), Maria Anissegou (cello), Thanassis Zotos (perc, voc).<br \/>\nAuch beginnt er mit Vertonungen von Gedichten des \u201egro\u00dfen\u201c Georgios Seferis, Odysseas Elytis u. Thodoris Gonis.<br \/>\nEine weitere Entdeckung war f\u00fcr Jannis Zotos der Dichter Mikis Theodorakis. Vor allem die fr\u00fchen Texte des Komponisten finden seine besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Er beginnt mit deren Vertonung. Diese Arbeit endet 2007 mit der CD \u201eDie leisen Stimmen der Erinnerung\u201c. Bewusst w\u00e4hlt Zotos f\u00fcr diese Songs die Form von rockigen Popsongs.
